When Networking Felt Like a Performance, I Knew Something Had to Change

For a long time, I played the networking game exactly how I thought I was supposed to.

I joined the Facebook groups. I went to the virtual meetups. I exchanged business cards and added people on Instagram with the usual “we should totally connect” message. I showed up with my polished bio, prepared elevator pitch, and bright smile. On paper, I was doing it all right.

But inside, I felt empty. Disconnected.
Honestly… a little bit invisible.

There was this subtle pressure to perform, to impress, to have my message just right. And every time I left a networking event, online or in person, I felt drained. Not because I’m shy (I’m not). But because nothing about it felt real.

It wasn’t that people were unkind. It’s just that the energy felt transactional. Everyone was there to “get something.” And when that’s the energy in the room, it’s hard for authentic connection to breathe.

It took me a while to realize the root of the problem:
✨ It wasn’t how I was networking. It was what I believed networking was supposed to be.

I had inherited a definition of networking built on hustle, hierarchy, and transactional relationships. But that model didn’t fit who I am—or how I want to serve.

So, I stopped trying to "network"…
